ABOUT MY RAT FRIENDS
I started the MyRatFriends instagram account as a platform to share pictures of my pet rats. I decided to expand to a user-friendly website for rat lovers. I created this site to act as a simple resource for new or existing rat owners looking for information on these special creatures. I'm not a professional, just a girl with a huge love for these special animals. With that being said, I research each and every bit of information before adding it to this website in hopes of providing real, unbiased facts as well as my personal opinions and experiences. Each rat should be properly loved and taken care of...and that is my goal for this website!
I currently have 11 rats, 1 neutered male and 10 females - all of which I purchased from breeders or rescued. They live together in a double Critter Nation cage filled with plenty of hammocks, tunnels, nesting material, and chew toys. They are litter trained and I used fleece and hospital pads as bedding. My rats always have Oxbow rat food and fresh water available, but I supplement with fruits and veggies (peas are their favorites!). Their favorite treats include dried mealworms, hard boiled egg, dried pasta, and baby food.

Goblin learned to use the litter box in 2 days, and makes sure to keep himself nice and tidy. He loves to sleep under fleece and making nests out of tissues is his favorite past time. Flip him on his back and he'll groom your fingers while you kiss his warm, squishy belly. He's not the most graceful rat, often falling from things with a thump, but he is fearless. His ears wiggle when he eats his favorite treats!
HYDRA (hahy-druh)

Hydra is a sweet girl that is always willing to groom your fingers and face. In fact, she would love to give you a facial! Your skin has never been so smooth! She loves to explore but is very careful - making sure she doesn't get herself into tricky situations. She likes quick pets and back scratches...but not for too long because adventure awaits!
KELPIE (kel-pee)

Type: Standard Agouti Broken Hooded

Came Home: 8-19-15
Kelpie loves to explore and doesn't appreciate you getting in her way! She's always eager to come out of the cage, often sitting in wait by the front door. If you give her the oppurtunity, she'll gladly escape to explore new territory. She loves to sleep in the spacepod with her front teeth resting on the ledge. It looks super funny but she doesn't mind - she's getting her beauty sleep!
PIXIE (pik-see)

Type: Standard Double Rex

Pixie has the most dynamic personality of all the rats. She's smart, adventurous, and loves to give kisses. She turns to pudding in your hands when you pick her up and doesn't mind belly kisses one bit! While she loves human interaction, she also loves exploring. But if you move, be prepared for her to crawl up your legs to hitch a ride!
POOKA (poo-kuh)

Type: Standard Black Broken Hooded

Pooka is such a sweetie! If you touch her, prepare to get kisses galore! She loves to tunnel under blankets but always comes back up to say hi. She's more reserved in her exploring than the other rats which may be why she's the chubbiest one. She'd rather hang back in case you break out the treat can!
WILLO (wil-oh)

Type: Russian Silver Berkshire Dumbo Rex

Willo can be found in the dresser creating a nest (or clubhouse) out of tissues and pieces of garbage she collected. Socks are not welcome in the clubhouse and will be thrown out of the dresser. Touch her and prepare for her to roll on her back for playtime!

Independence is practically her middle name! Phoenyx loves climbing...on boxes, hampers, humans, lamp posts, etc. If she can get a bird's eye view, she wants it! She prefers exploring over human interaction - unless you have a treat for her! Try to grab her without a treat? She turns into a jumping bean and springs away from your hands for the next adventure!

Type: Siamese Dwarf

Sprite is a dwarf rat, which means she'll only grow 1/3 the size of standard rats! Dwarves are notorious for their high energy, and Sprite is no exception! She loves exploring, and even though she is currently the size of a mouse, that doesn't stop her from getting into trouble. She can get into any hammock or spacepod that she wants. Plus, she always wants attention!

The first thing we noticed about Seelie was her huge feet in contrast to her baby sized body! She has such a fun personality - friendly, curious, adventurous, and always willing to wrestle and play. Her nickname is Popcorn because, yes you guessed it, she popcorns all over the place when you touch her back. Her and Sprite are best friends.
Chimera (kī-ˈmir-ə)
Gender: Female
Type: Mink Bare Back
Came Home: 7-22-16
Chimera came to us from sad conditions. With us, she will have her first name, first peas, first taste of real love! She has a permanent head tilt (she looks like a confused puppy!) from an untreated ear infection, and that will always be a reminder of Chimera's past. However, we're intent on showing her true love, patience, and trust.
Harpy (härpē)
Gender: Female
Type: Dwarf Mink Self
Came Home: 11-30-16
Harpy is a mouse-sized dwarf with gorgeous mink fur. Initially, we got her so that Sprite would have a friend her same size, however Harpy has quickly shown that her small size will not stop her! She loves wrestling with rats of any size, and is full of life.
